Directories were also overwhelmingly dismissed, with 97% of people saying that using a directory to find a tradesman was a ‘lottery’.

The main reasons that personal recommendations matter so much, the survey showed, is that most people don’t know where to find a good tradesman. They worry about paying over paying, and get very stressed about the quality of the work. More than 50% of people surveyed said it’s difficult to find someone they can trust to recommend a good tradesman, and 85% said they worried about shoddy work. Safety is another big concern – perhaps surprisingly for men as well as women, with 59% of women and 35% of men admitting they worry about their safety with a stranger in the house.
